Former Planet Bike Employees launch Portland Design Works

Industry veterans Erik Olson and Dan Powell have launched Portland Design Works (PDW), a new brand of urban bicycle accessories with a focus on simple, beautiful design. The first two categories of product, grips and inflation, will begin shipping in mid-February and can be viewed on the new PDW website, www.ridepdw.com. Cargo racks, tools, mini-pumps and fenders will be available by late spring.

It is with great pleasure that we announce today the creation of a new DH race team in Canada. The XPREZO / Impact Designs / NOVATEC Racing Team originated from the mind of Patrick Bisson (Team Manager) and Jean-Philippe Simard (Team Manager & Team Mechanic). The main reason behind this project was to help some of Quebec best DH athletes to develop themselves in order to achieve their goals and participate/perform at 2010 UCI World Championships that will be held here in Mont-Ste-Anne, where all eyes will be turned towards Canadian & mainly Quebec own athletes.

Reach and stack based sizing for mountain bikes

In a joint effort between Turner and Transition bikes, a new standard for mountain bike frame sizing has been introduced. This new standard is based around reach and stack measurements, and is intended to clarify bike fit across bike models and brands.

After much anticipation, the dynamic duo of Sam Hill and Brendan Fairclough recently announced their new ride with Specialized. While this will be a new frame partner, the two time World Cup DH Champion Sam Hill chose to remain on SRAM. Both Hill and Fairclough will compete on SRAM drivetrain, RockShox suspension forks and rear shocks and Avid brakes. New starting in 2009, the team will also ride Truvativ cranksets. The agreement is for the next three years

Race for Tara 2 at Sand Hill Ranch Bike Park

On November 8th Sand Hill Ranch Bike Park will be hosting the second annual benefit race for Tara called appropriately enough the “Race for Tara 2”. Sand Hill is currently trying to gather volunteers to perform maintenance of the track before this event. They need some help fixing up the berms, jumps and mowing down the weeds. Park maintenance days will be October 18/19 and 25/26.

The 2008 mountain bike endurance season reaches its climax October 11-12 with the final of the Suzuki 24 Hour National Point Series, the Galactic Championships, held at the legendary venue of Moab, Utah. Race organizer Laird Knight found this title fitting partly because of the frequent UFO sightings at Behind the Rocks near Moab; the massive turnout for the event; the fact that the event is longer established and the field stronger than any other 24-hour mountain bike race this year - including those that call themselves world championships; and because it has drawn the strongest riders on the 24 Hour circuit.

The Whiteface Fall Classic Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, presented by High Peaks Cyclery, hits the trails of Whiteface Mountain on September 20 at noon. The Fall Classic has four divisions broken down by age and gender: beginner, sport, expert and pro. It is a challenging race featuring a lower mountain layout with a climb of 650 feet as well as fast, fun downhill sections.
